Audition for PSC
Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the Portland Symphonic Choir.

A Portland Symphonic Choir member is one who can accurately prepare music independently, sing with good intonation and blend, read music proficiently, and commit to all rehearsals and concert dates of our multi-concert season.

A complete schedule of rehearsals and concert dates is given to each member before the first rehearsal of the season. In general, there are 8 to 12 rehearsals preceding each concert, mostly on Monday evenings, plus additional rehearsals in concert weeks.

The Choir generally presents 3 of its own productions in a season with at least 2 engagements with the Oregon Symphony as well. One can count on about a month and a half or two of only Monday rehearsals ending in a week of multiple rehearsals and concerts. In that week, usually about 5 or 6 nights out of 8 are taken up with making music.

Portland Symphonic Choir auditions often take place at Portland State University, Lincoln Hall, at the corner of SW Mill St. & Broadway. Be sure to check on the location of the auditions since they are sometimes held elsewhere. Each audition lasts approximately 12 minutes and includes the following:

Each audition will have:
  • Solo - You'll sing a solo you've chosen from classical repertory (art song, aria, oratorio) or other source that shows the nature and qualities of your voice and singing skills. The piece does not have to be memorized but should be well-prepared. Please bring a copy of music for the accompanist.
  • Vocalises - You'll sing several vocalises to demonstrate your range and tessitura.
  • Sight singing - You'll be tested on how well you read simple melodies and individual choral lines at sight. You may be asked to sing a single part from a four-part choral work while the accompanist plays the other three parts.
  • Tonal memory - You'll sing back melodic phrases played on the piano.
Following your audition, you will be sent a letter containing the results and other information pertaining to Choir membership.
