Doug Schneider


Doug Schneider is one of the finest, most experienced and versatile keyboardists in the Pacific Northwest.  As an organist, pianist and harpsichordist he has performed in over 1000 recitals, as well as appearing with many of the Northwest’s leading ensembles, including the Oregon Symphony, Portland Opera, Northwest Boy Choir of Seattle, Cantores in Ecclesia, In Mulieribus, the Portland Symphonic Choir, Cappella Romana, and the Alaska Chamber Singers.  He appears regularly as a solo organ recitalist, liturgical organist, piano accompanist, continuo player at the harpsichord and organ, jazz musician, chamber musician and vocal coach.

As an organist, Mr. Schneider mastered the complete works of J. S. Bach early in his career, and has become a specialist in the organ music of Marcel Dupré.  He has appeared as a solo recitalist in many of our nation’s principal churches, including the cathedrals of Chicago, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis.  Schneider is also a fine liturgical organist with over three decades of experience in Roman Catholic music ministry.  In his twenties he was an Assistant Organist at Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral, and then served for many years as the Principal Organist at St. Mary’s Cathedral.  Presently he is the Director of Sacred Music at St. Joseph Church in Salem, Oregon.  He appears as organist on over two dozen recordings by leading composers for the liturgy, including Richard Proulx, Howard Helvey, Christopher Walker and Bernadette Farrell.

As an accompanist, Mr. Schneider has collaborated in recitals encompassing all the major instruments and voice.  One of his areas of expertise is the vocal and operatic repertoire, and was the principal vocal coach at Portland State University for 10 years.  Altogether, Mr. Schneider has coached over 50 operatic productions, including several years with Portland Opera and Chicago Opera Theatre, with repertoire ranging from the Baroque to 20th Century opera.  He also crosses over into musical theater, having performed in dozens of musical theater productions, including national touring productions of Hairspray, Wicked, A Chorus Line, The Book of Mormon, and Beautiful.

Doug Schneider is an exceptional improvisor, having won an award from Downbeat magazine for outstanding jazz saxophone improvisation.  He has vast experience as a lead alto and tenor saxophonist in big bands as well as in small ensembles, and is a fine improvising jazz pianist as well.    Doug grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and graduated as valedictorian of Woodbury High School. He attended Lawrence University, where he also graduated as valedictorian, earning degrees in history and music.
