2015–16 Season

A Child of Our Time

Artistic Director, Dr. Steven Zopfi conducts the Portland Symphonic Choir and the Portland Sinfonietta in this special presentation of Michael Tippett’s powerful and rarely performed oratorio.

Inspired by the events leading to Kristallnacht, the wave of anti-Jewish pogroms that began in 1938, Tippett wrote this piece in the midst of WWII. Featuring four outstanding soloists, Marlette Buchanan, soprano, Andre Flynn, bass baritone, Carl Halvorson, tenor, and Angela Niederloh, mezzo soprano, this work interweaves African American spirituals with references to Bach and Handel in a timeless work about human light and darkness, despair and hope, and the dreadful destruction of war.

To enhance the audience experience, the Portland Symphonic Choir has partnered with the Oregon Jewish Museum, who will curate a series of images that will be projected during the performance, adding a powerful visual component to the event. “We are thankful for OJM’s partnership on this project,” says Dr. Steven Zopfi. “We believe that the images will truly bring to life the experience the composer was living as he wrote the work, and will engage our community in a deeper understanding of social justice issues throughout time.”
