Noteworthy News, November 12th

This (slightly) early edition of Noteworthy News is a reminder to the folks recording parts for the concert that now is the time to get it done! The Monday cutoff time (midnight) is absolute. Production editing is labor intensive and quite time consuming. Everyone has been invited to record Gaudete and I Wonder as I Wander.
Important upcoming dates:

  • Monday, November 16, Final day to submit all recordings - no rehearsal

  • No Rehearsal the week of Thanksgiving

  • Monday, November 30, No rehearsal

  • Monday, December 7, 7 pm Happy Hour (Zoom)

  • Sunday, December 13, 4 pm Concert: Virtual Wintersong!

We are planning a Happy Hour for Monday, December 7th to celebrate our work on Wintersong (perhaps take a sneak-peak at the early edits), make a special presentation, and enjoy virtual social time with a sing-a-long or two. BYOB(!)

Starting in January, Portland Symphonic Choir Winter and early Spring activities will feature a Virtual Masterworks Series. We are inviting prestigious choral directors from around the country to join us for an evening of inspirational song, community, and discussion. Save these dates for our coming virtual (Zoom) sessions: Monday, January 25, Monday, February 22, Monday, March 29, and Tuesday, April 27.

Last minute recording best practices:

  • Locate and practice with the Guide Tracks (pschoir.org/members, select Study Resources).

  • Use 2 devices, one to play the Guide Track, the other to record your video.

    • Use just one headphone/earbud to hear the Guide Track while recording.

    • A Smartphone is recommended for recording, just like a video selfie.

  • Record a practice track (or 2) and listen to your results for each piece.

    • Production Company requests a "vertical video."

    • Use a secure device (tripod) or location (bookshelf) for your Smartphone.

    • Listen for odd background noises (furnace fan, neighbor's leaf blower).

    • Make adjustments/improvements.

    • Remember to smile and make as much eye contact with your camera as possible.

  • Consider standing while recording, just like a concert (best breath support).

  • Wear "business casual" clothing.

  • Use a plain background being mindful of light source (no back-lighting).

  • Refer to the Project Editor's LINK for their hints and descriptions.
