After The Fire (PSC New Works Winner)
Alexandra Kalinowski
In January of this year my parents' house, and my childhood home, burned down along with the entire neighborhood I grew up in. My husband and I evacuated my parents and as much of their belongings as we could grab and were one of the last cars to get out of the mountainous area as palm trees above us were on fire and all around us people ran. I recently returned to the neighborhood and the empty lot for the first time. To my utter disbelief I found a single white rose blooming out of the ground where a huge bush once stood. I saw plants and flowers growing in what had once been a beautiful garden and I was overwhelmed with both grief and hope. When I came home I sat down at the piano and played a quartal harmony and this piece came to me quite quickly; I knew exactly what I wanted to say.
